THE 8-BIT ADVENTURE ALBUM

Posted by Marcos on January 31, 2010

Want some crazy-hot original chiptune music? I loved it, and I highly reccommend it to any chiptune lovers out there. The album is basically a soundtrack to a non-existent game. The music definitely would cause me to pick this game up if it was a real game, but I can settle for just a great album. Enjoy this album!

Track 16 – Ain’t 2 Ruffie for Me (Mountain Ruff Boss)

Track 21 – Glactical Warfare (Airship Chase Boss)

Super 8 Bit Brothers – Brawl

Posted by Marcos on January 9, 2010

Today we have a danceable electro/indie pop album up for review that passes the test of pleasing the ear and getting the heart beat in synced with the bass beat. If you haven’t the foggiest clue who the Super 8 Bit Brothers are, there ya go. Check out the bio and then come back, it’ll do you some good. Now to begin with this delectable album’s review.

First impressions when I first ran through the album was, “…what?” and then after a second time, “…Great!”. To best describe this album in one shot would be to say that it’s a melding of your favorite present and past gaming experiences and characters with catchy and creative music and lyricism. Makes sense, right? We’ll let’s bring up some tracks.

The first track I found clever and produced interestingly is Track 03 “Blinky Loves Pepper”. Singing in the perspective of Blinky, we have a very alluring message being sent to Pac-Man. A line reads

“If you’re lonely you know where to find me
If you’re hungry come feast on my body”

What crosses me as amusing is the Sax playing, hovering over the singing and beat of the song that sounds like it’s calling out to Pac-Man. Really impressive in capturing the moment. ;)

Another classic game brought to light with a track name that gives the best advice to any barrel dealer is Track 12, “Don’t Sell the Barrels to the Monkey”. Especially if the monkey’s first initial begins with a D and ends with a K. This track introduces an old salesman who sells barrels so you can ship your items safely. Nothing sinister, right? Well, one day an Ape customer comes along and demands barrels, and the salesman feels that this ape is a hard worker and deserves barrels for his money. The boss pulls the salesman to the side and tells him, “Let’s talk outside. I have but one small rule you should abide. Don’tcha sell the barrels to the monkey, I think the monkey is up to no good”. What does he do? That old salesman sells those barrels and we get Donkey Kong. Thank you old salesman, you gave us a series that will become one of the best. You see what I did here? Super 8 Bit Brothers have a way with words and tells amazing stories through each song. I can almost imagine these guys writing stories of the origin of game series and sing each tale to us in rhyme. It takes a creative mind to come up with this kind of story for the barrels. Great Lyricism, guys!

I’ll cover two songs that sing about games of present times I found really amusing. The first song up is Track 09 “Goodbye Cruel World (Of Worldcraft)”. The title again tells the main story here, a user bidding adieu to WOW and moving on with their life. I liked this track a lot because I used to play MMORPGs quite often. After about a month or two I found myself just disappearing suddenly from the servers without any word of my permanent departure. That’s fine though, they sure as heck didn’t do me any good except frustrate me. Again, Super 8 Bit Brothers presents a track with great lyricism and music accompaniment.

Last track I’ll cover is my favorite one, Track 06 “Roll it Up”. Do we have any Katamari Damacy fans here? I found this song very enjoyable because of its chipper nature. The Prince is the main character here, singing about rolling things up. It’s as simple as that. The music and singing really puts a smile on my face. This track gets two thumbs up for being fun, chipper, and a joyous listen.

Super 8 Bit Brother’s “Brawl” album is a joyous listening with the reliving of past and present games accompanied by great music and creative lyrics. I refer this album to everyone because there is something to find in here that you would be able to pick out and say “Hey I know what game they are singing about” . I guarantee it…well unless of course you don’t know anything about video games, then you’re tough out of luck.

The Tsunami Effect – OST

Posted by Marcos on October 29, 2009

The Tsunami Effect - OSTDownload OST

Today we’re doing a review on The Tsunami Effect’s OST, which will be available on November 1st, 2009. Already a listener and had reviewed his first album Star Ship 54 under VGTO! Reviews, I was in high anticipation when news struck me that he was releasing a new album. For those who haven’t heard his first album, take a stroll by his myspace and download it for FREE (don’t you love that word).

The album contains 25 tracks with the addition of a pretty cool cover. I won’t tell you what that cover is, you’ll have to hear it yourself. True to the name, the album is set as if it were a literal OST. Each track has a name that tells a story that could possibly happening. You have tracks like “Timeless Battle” that goes to “Peace, At Last”, and then “New Day Ahead”. That’s a cool concept that I’ve seen before, but hasn’t and probably won’t ever get old for me.

I hope you like trance, electronic, ambient music, because this is the order of the bill, one in which is welcomed with a warm, open embrace. The album is crafted with such elegance that I find myself really enjoying a tune and having it go through repeat. The best part of that is I sometimes lose myself in the music and forget when a track repeats, keeping the track living on.  Some personal favorite tracks are “The Ocean Blue”, “EX-P (The Rebellions Move)”, and “Infiltration”.

I don’t listen to trance or electronic music on a normal basis, so I don’t have any repertoires that I could compare or recommend that bares a resemblance to this album. You’ll have to do that homework on your own. OST was definitely a treat to listen to and one of the better trance/electronic/ambient albums I have heard this year, a must download if you are a fan in those genres.

Disc(s): Digital
Length: 53:27
Composer(s): Pulse Blast
Arranger: Pulse Blast
Publisher: JuiceBox Records
Performers: Pulse Blast
Favorite Track: 15 I Can’t Go Back

After I created a myspace for Rhythmroo.com, I went out and searched for any groups/solo musicians that had anything related to music. I came across a great number rock and chiptune, with nerdcore following behind. Pulse Blast* was one of the chiptunists I found that had some pretty cool tracks . I just really took a great liking to his chiptune tracks and enjoyed The Journey. After listening through the album, I could definitely see the layout of a game here. It would actually be pretty sweet if someone made a game and used this album as a soundtrack. I definitely could see it happen.

It’s a bit unfortunate, but he is no longer doing chiptune music last time I checked, but what he is doing right now is this. The tracks are quite serene and well played. I hope he writes more!

*Pure Blast is Chiptune David. He simpyl changed the name.

Disc(s): Digital
Length: 24:16
Composer(s): I Fight Dragons
Arranger: I Fight Dragons
Publisher:
Performers: I Fight Dragons
Favorite Track: 07 I Fight Dragons Overture 1.0

We move now to rock and chiptune this time around with I Fight Dragon’s Free Ep*, available by email subscription only, which was a pretty pleasurable listen. They’ve included a total of 7 tracks and a word document of each track’s origin or description (Like what albums they come from and so on). Some tracks are exclusive to subscribers only, so I say sign up to get some cool tracks. Normally I wouldn’t condone having to sign up, but this album found a place in my heart as being pretty awesome, so they have my thumbs up.

Let me at least make known that the exclusives on this free EP are live recordings, minus one, but they are of good quality and very cool, as well as humourous. First and quite posibly last time I’ll say this, but signup to get this EP. It really is that good. :)

* The image used to represent this free ep isn’t the official image…but it will do. Just a note so not to be confused with the offical album.
